Our students need to be prepared to live and work as citizens of an increasingly global society. They need the skills to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, as well as the critical thinking skills to examine issues from various historic, ethical, societal, and economic perspectives.

The primary goal of this weeklong workshop is to help you relate your courses and your discipline to the global context and to give you the tools to infuse your current courses with international and cross-cultural perspectives.

Internationalizing your course may take one of many forms. For example:

§ Infusing an existing unit with examples, readings, group tasks, and discussion topics that examine the unit themes from cross-cultural or multi-national perspectives.

§ A summary module that helps students review the overriding themes of the course from cross-cultural or cross-national perspectives.

§ A unit that gives students experience in using the tools of your discipline to explore issues related to another nation or other cultures.

This Fellowship will guide you in developing a concrete plan. As a group, we’ll work to help you identify how the skills and content of your course impact and are impacted by the global context. We’ll review principles of course design and interactive learning. We’ll also help you identify human, print, and material resources within the College, the library, and the Washington area. You’ll then have the plan, tools, and resources to begin developing the specific lessons, materials, activities, and assessment tools to use with your class.

A second major goal of the Fellowship is that you share the ideas, skills, and materials you develop with others in your discipline. At the end of the workshop, we’ll decide as a group how we want to do this.

The Global Learning Initiative at Montgomery College is a multifaceted program that includes various opportunities and programs to enhance the educational process for all of our students.

As such, faculty members will be afforded a new Professional Development opportunity to enhance their ability to infuse internationalized curricula into their courses. Our new Faculty Workshop Series to Internationalize Courses will guide faculty through an intentional, strategic, and appropriate process to internationalize their courses. To that end, faculty will learn to promote a multicultural awareness for their students.

As a result, our internationalized courses will help prepare our students socially and professionally to enter the workforce with an enhanced perspective of our global society.
